As moms, we often play several roles in a day. Some of us are full-time workers, some full-time entrepreneurs, some work more than one job, some have more than one kid, etc. For me, I have 4 kids, my husband, my parents, my full-time job, my online boutique, my design business, and my blogs. All the aforementioned people and things explain the roles I play each day. Many times, I have forgotten that while being a mother, a wife, a daughter, a worker and an entrepreneur, I also need to be good to myself and take care of me. It’s easy to get wrapped up in your roles in life and forget that you have to take care of yourself in order to keep up with the other roles. So I began learning to pick out some relaxing activities that I could do daily, at least for a few minutes. These 5 relaxation tips are some that I have found helpful to me, and they just might work for you too!
Find a Good Book to Read
I love reading certain romance novels, magazines, inspirational books and more. So, I began searching for books that I was interested in reading, downloading them to my phone and picking a good time to dive in. I used to love to read and would read daily. One day a few years ago, I realized I had not read a book in years. So, I found one and started reading. I realized I could not read during the daytime, nor when I came home from work. So, at night when I got in the tub, I would read for 15 minutes. Some nights, I am able to read an additional 15 minutes when I first lay in bed. This gave me time to relax and prepare for bed.
Take a Relaxing Bath (Time it!)
So, I am sure you’re looking at the time it part! Well, for me, I have 4 kids, as I said. I can get in the tub and relax and it takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes before someone looks for me or yells for me. So, if I know I need a relaxing bath, I run the water, gather my clothes and I do these two quickly, trying not to get distracted and start doing something else like folding left over laundry, or cleaning. I get in the tub knowing that I have about 15 minutes of silence and peace. Its blissful! Its nice relaxation time, even though it seems like a short amount of time.
Coloring, Doodling, Lettering
So the adult coloring phase took the nation by storm some time ago. It is still quite a phase! News Flash: I have been coloring since I was a kid and never stopped. When the phase started, I just transitioned over to the “adult coloring books”! I love to color and draw. Lettering became a new hobby for me a few months ago. These things are relaxing because they require focus. If you become a little passionate about it, you’ll focus, which will allow you to clear your mind and relax. This is good relaxation time for me. I usually try to do one of these daily. Some days I don’t get around to it but when I do, its great!
My prayer time is precious relaxation. I get to empty my heart and thoughts, recall my the things I am most grateful and thankful for and just try to hear God’s soothing voice. Whether you are Christian, or not, meditating is ultimate relaxation.
Find a Hobby
Well, I have many hobbies! So many things can constitute as a hobby. From cooking to knitting, photography to crafting, working on puzzles, journaling and the list goes on and on. Take a few moments and do something that puts you in a “happy place”. It’s okay to make yourself happy! I usually plan what day and time will be just for my hobby. It always fun looking forward to it.
So, now that you know some of the ways I sneak in a little me time, a little relaxation time, a little happy place time, I hope this at least gets your wheels turning on how to make a little time for yourself. It’s important to cater to you! I remember that old saying: If mom’s not happy, no one is happy! Think about it. If we moms are tired, angry, or upset, the vibes carry and usually ends up with everyone not being so bright eyed and bushy tail! So take a little time for you, so that your time that is dedicated to the family is precious and well spent!
